Courteous Canine, Inc - Trick Training List

Use the following list to select tricks you would like to teach your dog:

• Bow

  Dog lowers front end to the ground while back end stays up. Taught with a target stick.

• Crawl

  Dog crawls on ground, or under owner's leg, or under furniture.
• 

  Down

  "Ruckus" Fahle performing a beautiful sphinx down with gorgeous attention.

• Show me your belly

  Dog rolls over on back and shows his belly.

• Roll over

  a classic that is always fun.

• No, not me

  This is a trick in which you teach your dog to shake his head so when you ask him "did you do it?" he will shake his head "no, not me".

• Sleepy/Awake

  Dog is in a down position and lowers head to ground or lifts head for each of the two cues.

• Tumble

  The same roll over in the other direction.

• Spin

  Dog spins in clockwise direction.
• 

  Beg

  Is a classic trick. Here Daisy, a Jack Russell demonstrates just how to do it.

• Twist

  Dog spins in counter-clockwise direction.

• Put your head down

  Taught to the dog that is already laying down.

• Through

  Dog weaves through owner's legs.

• Loop

  Dog loops around the owner's left leg.

• Fruit

  Dog loops around owner's right leg.

• Wrap

  Ddog figure eights around both of owner's legs.

• Sit pretty

  The classic beg position.

• Jumpies

  Dog jumps into owner's arms.

• Boing!

  Dog jumps into air. Dog bounces in front of owner without making contact.

• Hind

  Dog stands on hind legs.
• 

  Open and close the door

  To teach a dog to open the door you train them to tug on a cord or rope. The dog can then use their feet to close the door.

• Dance

  Dog stands and turns on hind legs.

• Hop

  Dog stands on hind legs and hops.

• Toward

  Dog stands on hind legs and moves forward toward you.

• Away

  Dog stands on hind legs and moves backward away from you.

• Front

  Dog walks toward you as you walk backward.

• Back

  Dog walks backward as you move toward him.

• Half

  Dog moves sideways to the left.

• Pass

  Dog moves sideways to the right.

  Target training

  One of Courteous Canine, Inc.'s trainers, taught his dog to play the drums with the help of target training

• Left and right

  Teach dog to turn head or move in direction that you are indicating.

• Hoop

  Dog jumps through owner's arms.

• Lights on/off

  Teach your dog to turn lights on and off using a target.

• Touch

  Used to teach dog to touch various things. Can lead to bell ringing, or playing piano, or kid's toys.

• Find it

  Dog finds a certain toy that owner has hidden for him.

• Follow

  Dog can be taught to follow the target stick, or to follow you.

• Circle

  Dog circles you in a clockwise direction.

• Around

  Dog circles you in a counter-clockwise direction.
• 

  Shake

  The classic.

• Other paw

  Dog shakes with the other paw.

• High five

  Dog reaches up high to make contact with your hand.

• Down low

  Dog reaches down to make contact with your hand.

• High Ten

  Dog reaches up with both paws to make contact with both your hands.

• Wave

  Dog uses front paw to wave.

• Tapping/Pawing

  Can be used to teach your dog how to solve math problems. This is an advanced trick. The horse Clever Hans knew this trick very well.

• Dig

  Dog digs on cue.

• Get it

  Dog gets whatever object you are pointing at or are asking him to retrieve.

• Bring it

  Dog brings whatever he is holding in his mouth to you.

• Give

  Dog drops object into your hand.

• Recycle

  Dog picks up cans and drops them in a container.

• Put away your toys

  Dog picks up toys and puts them in toy box. Another advanced trick.

• Get the ____

  Could be phone, remote, car keys, leash, or even Biscuit for a real challenge! This is yet another advanced trick.

• Sneeze

  Dog sneezes on cue.

• Slam dunk

  Get a Nerf basketball and a small hoop, hang at dog's mouth level and teach him to slam dunk it!

• Get me a soda

  A very advanced trick that is taught in stages beginning with
  1. go to the frige (target training)
  2. open the frige (tug)
  3. get the soda (retrieving)
  4. bring the soda (more retrieving)
  5. close the frige (target training)

• Gimme a kiss

  Another classic.

• Speak and Quiet

  A basic fun trick. It is important to add quiet so that you can make the barking stop.

• Howl

  A fun trick.

• Yawn

  This can be challenging to teach.

• Head on knee

  Dog places his head on your knee.

• Get your tail

  A fun cue that is easy to teach dogs who already chase their tails.

• Shake off

  Teaches your dog to shake off water or anything else on command.

• Towel Dry

  Your dog rubs himself on a towel you place on the ground on cue.

• Head stand

  Dog puts weight forward on head and front legs while standing on the toes of his hind legs.
• 

  Touch Foot
