Book Review of the "Dog Health and Nutrition for Dummies"
written by Dr. Christine Zink

Click and jackpot for Dr. Christine Zink for writing such an excellent book. Dr. Zink backs up what she has written with facts. This informative book is fun to read and contains lots of information. My favorite parts are the "technical stuff" comments. Dr. Zink explains how to keep your dog thin and includes such great tips as adding plain canned pumpkin to your dog's diet to help him loose weight. The pumpkin makes the dog feel full while adding very few calories to his actual meal. My Jack Russell Terrier, Arnie, thinks that Dr. Zink is a genius, because now he finally gets to feel full. His only complaint is that the full feeling only lasts a few hours and that he should therefore be fed 12 times a day.

Dr. Zink warns dog owners of the dangers of raw diet and includes information on a dog that nearly died as the result of a parasite that attacked and damaged his brain. While the dog survived, the brain damage was irreversible. However, Dr. Zink also cautions owners to carefully research the dog food that they have selected. She also says that the most expensive food is not necessarily the best, but that cheap foods always mean cheap ingredients. Cheap ingredients are not recommended since they are rarely digestible to dogs. That is why they are not used for humans and that is a reason they should not be used for dog either.

Anyway, this is an excellent book and a must read for all dog owners. Dr. Zink is a talented writer and this book will be just as important and as significant a work as her first book, "Coaching the Canine Athlete".
